Monkey in the middle

A fast reaction game that promotes passing accuracy, ball control and agility through play.

This is how it works:

One player is the “piggy” and stands in the middle. The other players throw a ball to each other and try to prevent the piggy from catching the ball. The piggy can fend off the ball with its hands or feet. Whoever catches the ball becomes the new piggy.

Learning objectives:

  • Promotion of speed and agility
  • Training in passing and ball control
  • Development of reaction and anticipation skills

Coaching-Keys:

  • Adjust the playing area: Adjust the size of the playing area to the number and age of the players.
  • Rule variation:
    • Restrict the way the piggy receives the ball (e.g. only with the hands).
    • Limit the number of permitted ball contacts per player.
  • Motivation: Encourage the players to move actively and not to hold the ball for too long.
