A great drill to practice the movement cycle starts with understanding the sequence of movements. It’s best to start with shadow exercises: focus on the split step, the step to the ball, the adjustment, the swing and the return to the starting position.
Start intensely on the balls of your feet (toes). Take a split step, move to the ball, adjust, execute the stroke and cover the court. Practice this both forwards and backwards, with the forehand and backhand.
Do the exercises slowly at first, then gradually increase the pace and extend the running path. Use Crossover steps to cover more efficiently. Repeat the sequence several times until you get a feel for the flow of the movement cycle.
The goal is to internalise the rhythm of movement and improve your responsiveness on the court.
