High backhand volley by Dimitrov

It’s all about rhythm! Three adjustment steps, perfect high contact point, and a forward motion flow. Grigor Dimitrov shows us his high backhand volley here.

Using a 3-step combination of “left-right-left,” he finds his rhythm of movement and shifts his weight forward and upward at the right moment.

He has the ball completely on the racket, his stroke arm is extended, the racket is pointing from overhead, and his left hand provides the counter-movement and balance. At this point, his front right leg is still in the air.

He lands on his right leg. His left arm controls the counter-movement and prevents over-rotation. The follow-through moves lower hand.

He then follows his ball toward the net in one fluid motion.

Coaching Keys

  • When training, make sure to practice volleys at different heights and positions.
  • Even if you are two-handed, it makes sense to play this volley with one hand.
  • Make sure that your left hand/arm makes a counter-movement.
  • Practice a footwork rhythm
  • Always follow your volley towards the net

Key Education Factor

The Key Education Factor is the development of rhythmic movement coordination combined with stable upper body control.
Players learn to synchronize footwork, contact timing, and forward transition—resulting in more controlled, offensive volleys and improved net dominance.

Progression by Playing Level

Playing Level 2

  • Develop basic volley control with simple footwork patterns
  • Introduce rhythm through structured step sequences (e.g. 3-step patterns)
  • Focus on clean contact point and balance

Playing Level 3

  • Train volleys at varying heights and positions
  • Improve coordination between footwork rhythm and stroke execution
  • Introduce forward movement after contact

Playing Level 4

  • Execute high volleys under time pressure with precise rhythm
  • Optimize upper body stability and counter-movement
  • Combine volley, landing, and forward transition into one fluid action
