Ball transport in the cone relay

A fast relay game in which teamwork, body tension and ball control are required.

How it works:

In this relay exercise, two pairs of children start at opposite baselines. Each pair has a ball that is balanced on a cone. The goal is to run quickly to the opposite cone – without the ball falling off. Whoever manages to transport the ball safely hands it over to their partner, who continues straight away. After two rounds, it’s time to see: Who was faster at the goal?

The exercise can be implemented immediately in any hall or on the court with little material and minimal effort.

Learning objectives:

  • Speed & acceleration: The children practise short, explosive sprints.
  • Body tension & control: The ball must remain balanced – this requires precision.
  • Coordination: Passing the ball requires timing and sensitivity.
  • Teamwork: Only those who work well as a team will come out on top in the end.

Coaching Keys:

  • Make sure you have stable cones and light balls (e.g. tennis ball or balloon).
  • The ball must remain on the cone for the entire course.
  • If it falls off: return to the starting point!
  • Clearly mark where to start and hand over.

Depending on ability level: vary with obstacles or running backwards.
